I always use a block of wood between the hammer and a casting. That way you can hit it pretty hard without the risk of breaking anything. Tapping the cap is the ideal way to get it loose. You can also crank the engine (by hand) and when the crank tries to pull the piston downward, sometimes the cap will come off. I will also second what others have said about being careful to re-assemble properly.
