Don, when IH got to the Black Stripe 66 series, they did somthing totally stupid. They made the shaft going down to the reverse shift fork one piece, from above the cover all the way down to the shift fork. When you pull the cover, the reverse shift fork is going to fall down, and you will need to drain all the oil and remove the reverse idler cover on the left side of the transmission case, so you can get the shift fork back in position. You'll need another set of hands when you put the cover back on. There is a special tool avalible to avoid this problem, mabey your Case-IH dealer will rent it to you? That problem is my biggest complaint about the late 66 series, 86 series, and 3088 series. This job only takes an hour on the 26, 56 and early 66 series, it took me all day to do my 786. Also, the cover will not come off if the transmission is in neutral (don't ask me why), it needs to be in High or Low (can't rmember which). Once you get it off, repair will be obvious. Look for a weak or missing detent spring, worn detent notches, missing rollers (there should be two), and if a roller is missing, the shift control arm that it rides on could be damaged.
