Timing is off. After installing new points you need to time the engine. Get out the timing light and adjust the distributor - retime the engine. My guess is that the point gap is not set correctly.

Double check the tappets. One or more could be set to close/tight.

Cause of back fire - Anything involved with the engine timing. This includes the ignition system and the valve train.
