Righto… I agree point gap is probably off. Probably too wide, retarding the spark enough that the combustion is not complete before the exhaust valve opens causing the backfire.

I would also check a shop manual (like an IT manual) or owner’s manual to see if the valve adjustment is to be done HOT or COLD. As the engine warms up, the valve train parts all expand slightly, which will absorb some if not all the tappet gap. If the valve clearance is to be set HOT and is set COLD instead, not enough clearance will remain in the valve train when the engine is warm causing valves not to close properly. This will also cause backfiring.
