I think I'd time it to specs and continue from there. There's a procedure for doing that in the owner's manual or you can find other posts that tell you how in the archives. I'd check the point gap with a dwell meter - 60 degrees dwell for battery ignition on a 4-cylinder engine. As a follow-up on the arcing notes in another post, try looking at your wires/ignition system in a moonless dark night and see if you can see any arcing (tiny blue-white lightning bolts) happening between the wires or around the cap. Just a few ideas. Let us know what the cure finally turns out to be.
