I believe the 404 was originally 12 volt, could be wrong. Such tractors did use a resistor and a 6 volt coil along with a 12 volt generator. Points, plugs, plug wires, coil and condensor -- Any and all may need to be replaced -- and be sure the 1342 firing order is wired correctly, and that it is timed properly. You could have a loose distributer shaft. You could also have burned valves or valves not adjusted properly. A burned valve will sound like, and is, a miss. Otherwise you have a fuel problem. There is nothing wrong with a 6 volt coil and resistor, probably thousands of OEM tractors, and as many conversions in existance. I have one.
