Josh - Here's what works for me:

Once the engine is all together and the sump is filled with oil, remove the spark plugs. Shoot a squirt or two of engine oil into each plug opening (probably not necessary since I use pre-lube, but I do it anyway) then crank the engine with the starter until the oil gage comes off the pin. You are now assured the lube system is fully charged with oil. (Note: It'll take a minute or two of cranking for the gage move)

Now stick the plugs back, check the oil level and fire her up!
