Another trick I use on a fresh motor is to dump the last new quart of oil down in the oil filter opening, then assemble the filter housing and fire 'er up. The oil you put in through the valve cover will lube the top end for you. After installing the rings, I soak the piston and ring assy with engine oil before installing with a ring compressor so they are always ready to go. Stan(VA).
