As to the shield--the only thing I would worry about with that is that if water did get in behind it, the rubber can"t "breathe" so it would hold that moisture in there, instead of allowing it to evaporate. Like someone else said, as long as your system is in good condition, it"s probably not a problem, but if you want to do something, I would suggest just giving the wires, dist. cap, etc., a quick wipe down when you"re done. If you store it inside a shed that gets above freezing during the winter, it might be more likely to be a problem, but unless you actually experience a problem, I wouldn"t worry about it.
