M PTO

I have an M, engine overhauled and ready to go. I put a 3 point hitch on. Planned to mow with a bush hog. I tried to put the mower on, but shaft from the PTO goes into the hydralic pump. The mower needs a shaft to go into it to run it. I bought an 10" extension. When I tried to use it, it wouldn't stay together. It would kick the mower off. Eventually grinding up the extension shaft. What is needed so I can use my tractor with mower.
