Bob, The oblong hole in the BOTTOM of the bell housing is normally covered by a plate that bolts thru to a backing strip. This access is for clutch inspection and access to the timing marks. The roundish hole on the left side is the throw out bearing grease access hole as Stan suggested. Red ED
