You start in the center of the head and tighten in both directions. You keep increasing the torque every 10 or 15 ft-lbs until until you reach the recommended torque. Always go back to the center of the head and tighten the same bolts in the same sequence. I retorqued the head bolts after running the engine for awhile, while the engine was warm. Never had any leakage or head gaskets blown. The head bolts used on most cars now do not require retorqueing. Some head bolts are suppose to be used one time and then replaced. Some of these guys may have a sketch from a shop manual that shows the tightening sequence for a Farmall M. Good Luck, Hal PS: A good shop manual is a handy item to have on your tractor.
