Farmallhal: I felt the same way as you do on this question of coils. I went to CaseIH and they were able to supply a 12 volt coil and it stated right on it, no external resistor required. All you need do is eliminate the resistor from Bob's diagram. I had this same discussion with Bob. I also had some problems getting the light that Bob recomends. Just didn't have the exact light, and tractor would not always stop when ignition was turned off. I replaced the light with a push button type switch. Now when I want the alternator to excite I just hit the button. The reason for the push button type, so you don't leave it on when tractor is not running. Left on it will drain the battery.
