Bryan – If I understand your idea I don’t think it will work!! You still need to somehow shut off supply voltage to the #1 alternator terminal when you shut down. Simply connecting the diode/resistor to the (hot) #2 terminal like you propose will result a small backflow of current into the regulator whenever the alternator is stopped. While it’s not likely to burn out the regulator, it will heat the resistor and will cause a dead battery if allowed to sit for more than a day or two! Sorry!
