John, It's funny that I've found the exact same things that you have found on my tractor. I'm aware that in Novemeber 1, 1936 the tractors were switched to red. However my tractor was produced in June of 1936. The tractor has a bunch of red paint between the frame rails and a bunch of paint runs. I've wondered how good the original paint really was. Meaning, the paint had faded away over the years or simply fell off and they repainted it red. I've just haven't been able to locate any gray paint on the tractor anywhere but I did find a small flake of a really dark gray on the bottom side of the motor. I've wondered if the gray paint was actually old grease that was painted over with red. A search of the Wisconsin Historical Society records indicate that IH would paint a color to the buyers needs. I've often figured that meant construction companies. Just makes you wonder if the old F-20 was painted red from the factory to see what they would look like and help decide on the color change. Nebraska thanks for the red primer paint information. Where did you get that information if you don't mind me asking. You've taken apart many more of those on beasts then I have. I haven't taken another F-series tractor apart with the older gray paint to see if the interior was red or not.

While this may have been the bread and butter of the belt work in the past (since this is what made the money on many farms), the smaller tasks may have been and still can be its real claim to fame. The thresher would bring in the harvest (and income) once a y
