Depends on the octaine of the gasoline. Are you sure you have top dead center? Screw a stop in the number one sparkplug hole,rotate engine until stop touches piston then rotate back until stop touches again, halfway between the two will be top dead center. Timing marks can be off due to mass production. Hold a Degree Wheel up to the front of your front pulley and see what degree marks you've got 20 degree's? 30 degree's?, then you'll know what settings are best for your fuel, engine, combination. Rev the engine up to get the springs,weights out, now you can set the total timing. 38 degree's good on a racing chevy, but I back it off 2 degree's to make it live longer.
