i have a 656. overhauled it and rewired it fall of 2003. the only resistor on those is for the charging circuit in case the warning lamp burns out to still energize the alternator. well if you have a generator it may be different...just remembered about the early ones. the coil is actually wired to the terminal on the starter solenoid. it was confusing how some of it is designed, but i copied it exactly--it runs. you say you have juice at the carb solenoid. does the solenoid "click" when it is energized though. you will definitely hear and feel it. good luck -karl ps feel free to email. i have enabled it for you.
