Been putting caps, points and rotors in old Farmalls for now close unto 50 years, never had to spring the clips on one yet. I suspect that auto parts store gave you the wrong cap. When it comes to ignition parts CaseIH the only place to go. I bought a Farmall 140 two years ago, wouldn't run right or even stay running. Ignition parts looked good. I had IH parts on the shelf, compared them, not hard to see why it wouldn't run. The points were wrong shape, cap was different depth. I'm not saying they are all that way, but I've seen enough, it's worth the drive to CaseIH.
