My reason for asking about the washers on the end of the armature shaft was the possibility that the lack of them may allow the starter drive gear to move too far forward into the ring gear and get stuck there. It was just a hunch although when I shimmed the starter with washers it did not help. The solenoid consists of two small and two large posts. See photo of the solenoid at the link below. One small wire connects to each of the small posts so neither of the small posts have two wires connected to it. One of the large posts goes directly into the starter via a short "strap-type" connector. The other large post has two larger wires connected to it. These are the positive battery cable and a smaller wire that I believe runs back to the voltage regulator via the charge indicator.
