SUPER A - WON'T QUIT RUNNING

I finished restoration on my Super A and am having a problem with it running on after I push the ignition button in to stop it. It only is a problem after mowing or running it hard. It is a 1948 with the distributor ignition. I have heard of "dieseling" because of carbon buildup in the cylinder head, but it is a fresh engine with only several hours of running time since the rebuild. Can I advance or retard the timing to help this? Any advise would be appreciated.
