Does it have puffs of white smoke coming out of the exhaust when idling? If so, I would suspect that number one has low compression. Then it won't completely burn the fuel at idle, but the additional heat and engine speed you have when under a load will burn the fuel better. You can do a compression check through the spark plug hole. Another way to check quickly is to crank the engine over with the throttle in the off position and the engine in the diesel setting (not the normal start on gas setting). Listen as it cranks. If it speeds up in one spot, then you have a compression issue. If you suspect that, you can put no.1 on TDC and put compressed air through the spark plug hole and listen for where the air is escaping. Exhaust pipe?-exhaust valve is leaking. You get the idea. On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
