It sounds to me like when you shifted out of fourth, the 4th -5th shifter rail coasted into 5th or when you shifted out of 5th, the rail didn’t come out completely and is still in 5th. You can check this out by removing the shifter lever. This is done by knocking out the soft plugs on the side of the shifter tower and then sliding (or possibly lightly driving) the pivot pin for the shifter out of the tower. The shifter can then be removed and you can look into the hole. You should see four thin (less than 1/16th inch wide) guides and the three shifter rails (about 3/8 inch wide) with about ¾ inch notches in them. The notches should all align up across when the transmission is in neutral, but more than likely the one on the left hand side will have the notch ahead of the others. You can take the shifter or a long screwdriver (or other “lever”) and move this rail back in line with the others and your tractor should then be in neutral.

The bottom of the shifter is probably worn and not a nice rectangle any more. I would suggest building this up with a welder (or have it built up) while it is out so that it is reasonably snug in those shifter rails or this will happen again.
