Alan, generally speaking if the tractors not running and turning on the lights makes the ammeter swing to discharge, the ammeter polarity at least is correct. HOWEVER thats not the end of the story. If wired correct the ammeters SUPPLY terminal has but one connection and thats to the battery or starter,,,,,while its other LOAD terminal is wired to loads like lights n ignition (via switches) PLUS the BAT terminal on the cutout relay or Voltage Regulator. Is yours wired that way???????????????

Next, some cutout relays are bi polar and work at Positive or Negative ground simply by swapping the BAT and GEN terminals. However, the BAT and GEN terminal on the cutout relay ARE CORRECT FOR AND ASSUME YOURE AT THE CORRECT POLARITY.

Insure ammeter wiring then see if all your polarities (battery n relay) are correct. The relay MUST be wired to correspond to your ground and if it doesnt have the Pos or Neg labeling like the bi polar models (i.e ONLY has BAT and GEN labels) its not gonna work right if the tractors polarity has been reversed !!!!!
