In theory, the reverse flow cooling system was a great idea. In the real world, it works no better and has no real advantage over a normal system that is well sealed from debris being pulled in from around the grill screen. I'm sure the reverse flow system cost more to build, too. We have a 786 and a 3088, which are the same exact tractor aside from the reverse flow cooling system on the 3088. Believe it or not, the 786 runs at the middle of the first green bar on the guage under a good load, while the 3088 runs at the top of the first green bar under the same load. The 786 has 5000 more hours on it than the 3088, too! As for the hydros on the big tractors, they finally figured out that noone wants a 100+ horsepower tractor that they can't do tillage work with. A hydro transmisson is very unefficient for this type of work due to slippage. A 18-speed full powershift has almost every advantage of a hydro, while being much tougher, efficient, and slightly cheaper to produce and service. Look at the production numbers for the 3488 Hydro, only about 400 were sold. Don't think that Case didn't use any of IH's good ideas, the basic design of the Magnum transmission/rear end is the same as the 5088 series.
