I have a 1956 International 300u tractor. When I first got it, I used 10W-40 car oil in it and it used 2 quarts daily running a 6 ft bushhog cutter. I switched to 15W-40 diesel oil by Shell and now it never uses a drop and once a year I take the value cover off and inspect. This diesel oil is still flowing to the valves and I have no build up of sludge. I do not know enough about the various additives to know if using diesel oil shortens the bearing life.
