The 9 and 14 series had problems with a head cracking. People will say its because nobody didn't know how to operate them properly. No doubt a lot of diesel heads were cracked that way but I think there was more to it. The JD, Oliver, and Case don't have the reputation around here for cracking heads and they were just as popular as IH. I have had a few old IH mechanics tell me the heads had a design flaw or weren't design properly. We also followed the start up and shut down procedures to the letter on our TD 14A and the head still cracked.
