I don't think a starter from an M will fit the MD. One of the big suppliers of used tractor parts has starters for the MD listed in their catalog. It won't let me post with the name herein. The MD starter is a 12 volt starter, as all MDs were 12 volt, using two 6 volt batteries connected in series. To remove the clutch, remove the bolts that hold the clutch release carrier to the top of the housing. Remove the clamp bolts (You'll need to take loose all the external connections to the clutch) that hold the clutch release fork to the cross shaft. The fork is keyed to the cross shaft with two heavy washers located between the clamps and held in place by the bolts. Remove those washers. If there is anything else holding (I can't recall exactly) the cross shaft, take that loose. Now the cross shaft will slide out and you can remove the clutch fork. Take out three of the bolts that hold the clutch plate to the flywheel. Reinsert those bolts in the three holes in the clutch plate that had no bolt. Tighten those three bolts which compresses the clutch springs and releases it. Now unless I forgot something, the main drive shaft should tilt down enough to slide past the transmission coupling and be removed. Take the other three bolts out of clutch and remove it. I may have forgotten something as it has been a few years since I did this. The service manual says you can remove the clutch without removing the cross shaft. I got mine out without doing that, but I could not get it back in, so it's easier to just go ahead and take out the cross shaft. It's a dirty job down under there.
