34 in Rims vs 38s

Why do some older IH tractors have 34 inch
tires and others 38s? My 826D is listed as
having either (mine has the 34s) but I guess I
want to understand the reason why. 38s seem
much more common these days. 34 inch
wheels are certainly cheaper at sales. Any
input, o-Gurus-of-the-Red?
