Maybe I'm not supposed to buy any.

As some of you are aware I've been looking at some IH hydro tractors to use for transplanting. I've gone to see 2. Both were gas models (Hydro 70 and a 656 hydro). Neither would start when I was there. The 70 is now running but I was told it has some problem with the manifold or gasket. The 656 I went to see was at a dealership I often deal with and have really gotten good service from. It was sitting outside with the gas off. When they tried to start it they turned the gas on and it flooded almost immediately. They couldn't get it to fire even after turning the gas off. They told me those old updraft carburators flood easily and if I want to hear it run to let them know a day ahead and they would pull it inside and get it started. I don't think I want to mess with a tractor that is that hard to start. In all fairness though it was cold and damp and it had been sitting outside. My question is do you think it is carburator design (my case 630 and 200 are both updrafts and they will start ok) or does the carb just need rebuilt or should I just assume I'm not supposed to buy a gas hydro at this time. Price was good on both but the 656 was really good. Thanks for your thoughts.

Phil
PS
I'm posting this on both the IH and Tractor Talk boards.
