That happens alot.
Your starter is drawing so much juice away from the points that they dont fire that good and when you let off on the switch or key all the juice is directed to the points and it starts. it happened to my SM. All I needed was a new battery. I would try cleaning all battery and starter connections then if it still does it may be a rebuilt starter. May Help.
