Farmall Model A oil filter

The oil filter appears to block the discharge port in the filter mounting base. How does the oil get into the filter if the filter does not have a hole? The old filter has some ribs on the bottom. The new filter has a flat bottom. Neither appear designed to allow oil to get out of the discharge port.
Should I convert to a spin-on filter? or retain the older element type? This Model A engine uses the tall element filter.
