Battery Box - What gauge metal?

The battery box on my M is in awful shape, but rather than spending all the money to buy a new one I'm going to buy a piece of mild sheet and fiddle around cutting welding and bending to see if I can eventually make it look like new again. I realize its gonna be a lot of work, but it'll be a good challenge. So does anybody know what gauge the metal is? (under gas tank battery box)
