WD9 won't run on diesel

I pull started this tractor on diesel and drove it on the trailer. After that I used the starter to start it and drive it off. After a new head gasket and carb rebuild it now runs on gas(good) and not diesel. Is it possible that I replaced the decompression valve linkage backwards? Dosn't it only work one way? Right now if I pull it all I get is a facefull of raw fuel via the new chrome stack.
Soon I will make time to pull the valve cover to make sure of linkage placement.
