W6 Axle Replacement

One of my rear hubs and axles needs to be replaced. It has been suggested to leave the "new" hub attached to the "new" axle and replace as a unit. Can the seal be replaced, or does the hub have to be off the axel? Does that make sense, or should the time and effort be spent to remove the hub from the axel for easier installation. What's your guys thought????????
