I had a '44 H that popped out of 4th. I had to replace the 4th and 5th sliding gear and the 3rd and 4th stationary gear to solve the problem...fairly decent size job. I guess what I'm saying is that the 4th and 5th sliding gear is probably worn down on the H your talking about. In doing this repair to my H I ended up getting a whining noise in 5th gear....I think its because I was running a new 4th and 5th sliding gear on a used 5th stationary. If you replace the gears on the H your talking about you should replace the 4th and 5th sliding(this is one gear) and the 5th stationary gear...hope this helps.
