It's been more than 35 years since I worked on one of these, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
1. Make sure all the external linkage is in good shape and lubricated.
2. Take the top off and check the shifting parts. You may have a broken Cam Roller. Most of shifting parts can be replaced by removing the top.

My last experience involved broken roller cams and shaft. I was able to account for and remove the broken roller cam parts at the filter. I replaced the shaft through the rearend after removing the PTO.
