pulling H tranny cover, watch the rails?

Hello,
The service guide to my H says a sentence to the effect of, "remove belt pulley attachment if so equipped, then use caution when pulling top cover off transmission, so as not to damage the shifting forks which are attached to the underside"

now...ummmm just how in the heck is that going to work?

I have never opened an H transmission, but I need to as the darn shifter will NOT budge from 2nd gear. Hints, tips, guidance all wonderfully appreciated.
