'40 H transmission

I am restoring this H. I think the input shaft bearings are bad.Push in the clutch and it is quiet, shifting gears does not change the noise.Question,Do I need the top of tranny off and spilt the tractor to replace input shaft bearings? thanks in advance,have learned a lot from this forum
