Do you have an IPTO ,if so it is run off the pressure plate of the engine.noise could have been where the splined shaft goes into pressure plate,they will strip the splines if unit was treated roughly.Also look under trans. and see if you have a PTO disconnect lever it may have disengaged the PTO. These are a couple of problems I have found with none working PTO's. get yourself a IT or equivlant manual that shows trans. John
