Jerry First off, the M starter is ground polarity insensitive it rotates the correct direction on both positive and negative ground. As for the rest of the M electrical system, for the most part it also is ground polarity insensitive. As long as the generator is polarized after the battery has been installed and the ammeter is wired correctly, the tractor will run fine and the battery will charge on either polarity. (Incidentally however your M did come from the factory connected positive ground....) From your description it sounds like your battery is running down i.e. its not being charged when the engine is runs. Suggest working through the generator troubleshooting flow chart (punch below) to isolate the problem. However if you find the generator is charging and the battery is charged up, slow cranking means a bad connection (look at the battery, starter switch or frame ground), a bad starter switch or a tired starter.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
