AC delco altenator

I have a ac delco altenator that the case is getting hot while charging. Its on a deisel engine while running I'll shut the key off and it seems to cool down then I'll turn the key back on it gets hot again. It has a external regulator. it seems to be charging ok but I havn't tested it could be overcharging but it dosn't seem to be cooking the batteries? anyone have any ideas. thanks
