Accutally, I believe you prove him right. How? The alternator does require voltage from the battery to start generating voltage. This voltage magnetizes the field, which is just a big electromagnet. Once the rotor turns in the magnetic field, it puts out its own voltage. After the tractor is running, you can remove the battery and the tractor will still run because the alternator is feeding itself. Don't ever try this in a modern vehivle though. The electronics, like the computer, can be damaged. Just my input, Daniel.
