Greg, If original, your engine block should have a casting number of 354898R1/2 and will not have the C-123 designator on it. That didn't start until the R3 blocks with the 100/200 series tractors because the same blocks were used to create 113 and 123 engines in '51-'54. Before the 100/200 tractors the serial number either matched the tractor as in early A/Bs or was close but higher as in the Super series. They started again with C123-501 for the 100/200. I believe the splits were about C123-36000 for the x30 series, and C123-65000 for the x40 series with a new block casting number at each split. Expect the x40 series specs to be a little different as the heads were changed for both the x30/x40 tractors to have larger valves and a more shallow combustion chamber which made the valves longer as well. You will find several threads in the archives with details along this line and interchangeability of parts, or if you are looking for something specific, ask and we will try to help out. Stan(VA).

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
