battery not keeping charge

I have a Farmall 200 that will not keep batteries charged.This happens over time and I have had several different batteries in it,and a charger on it a lot of the time.
This machine has a 6 volt , positive ground system
I have bought cheap batteries in the past, but I just recently bought one from NAPA.
Can I put a meter on the terminals once it is started? Will I get a reading that will tell me anything? Should it be reading 6 volts??
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
