Rattle can primer, and primer surfacer are NOT waterproof. As a little test, just go pour some water on that primer, and then wet sand it. You will see that the water soaks into the primer like a sponge. The newer epoxy primers ARE just as good a seal as paint.
On the other hand, There isn't any reason to prep the metal, and then leave it for a year without painting. Once it's cleaned, bodywork done, primed and block sanded, 90% of the work is done.
