I would use the distributor for two reasons. The first is that it has more total response to engine needs at various speeds, adjusting the timing with a centrifugal advance. The second is that in my opinion they idle smoother with retarded timing (allowed by the centrifugal advance). The mag setup must allow for the impulse coupling action. There are several descriptions of it in the archives. Mag timing placed in the search for box will get you there. There are important elements to setting the coupling. I reread the info every time I do it. JimN
