Learned a hard lesson years ago when I was trying to jump a dead battery. No matter how long I tried to charge that battery and/or jump it would never even turn over. Replaced battery cables, etc for a week before buying a battery. Problem solved. Battery was obviously shorted, and current takes the path of least resistance which was in this case the battery itself.
