Can't hurt to recheck your point gap, but that fit on the cap worries me. Are you sure it's the right one? It should sort of fit just for putting it on, and then snug right down nicely when you mate the notch on the cap up to the lug on the cap (or is it the lug on the cap . . .?), at which point it should mate right up. The only slop should be that it might slip a couple of degrees either way as you twist it. But it should be a tight fit -- no side to side wiggling, no more than a little twist on its radius. A cap that's too tall or too big around will make too large a gap betwen the tip of the rotor and the contacts on the inside of the cap -- no spark. As far as the charging, have you had your battery load tested? It may be no good.
