Hello All.
I know I need to do a gear oil change in the rear end of my M. There is/was water getting into to the rear end, that I think I finally got sealed up. (The tractor has lived outside for the past 10 years or so at least, before I bought it). I still want to put something around the shifter just to make sure it sheds the water, and I put some rubber washers under the bolts on the cover to seal that up tight.
The previous owner said he used to pull the oil out, and heat it up outside to boil the water off. I know this past winter, when I started the tractor up, it bogged when I let out the clutch until the ice broke free.... I wasnt a happy guy.
So needing to change this oil, does anyone know if what GL rating has to be on the gear oil? The owners manual just says 13 gallons of high quality 90wt gear oil. I didnt know if I could use a GL-1, or if I need to try and use GL-4 or 5, which seems like overkill.
I saw some 80-90 at Wally World for about $8 a gallon, but I was reading on this forum that some folks were able to buy the 5 gallons of GL-1 from NAPA for about 40 bucks a pail. I would rather buy the NAPA oil, and get it in pail form, but I dont know if GL-1 is OK.
