I did take the time to check out the entire front when I flipped the gear around. The bearing behind the nut is tight, no slop. I didn't check the wheel bearings up in the air, but they both seem tight. The u-joint is snug. Without a doubt the upper bolster bushing is wore. I could see the gear move back and forth when I turned the steering shaft with vice grips.
Anyhoo, I've only managed one really good look over of the SM. My next day off, I'll be doing a little disassembly and try to get it charging.

As an addendum to this Super M adventure, I just picked another '53 SM that was a restoration not finished/barely started. Same stuff as mine except somewhat tore down. Bought it sight unseen. I'll save that project for a rainy day.
